Direct microplastic exposure via foodstuff and food packaging - plastic leachables and their health effects (diMPex)
Bidragets beskrivning
The amount and effects of microplastics have already been extensively reported in aquatic environments. The big question that the scientific community has not yet answered is the harmfulness of microplastics to human health. People are externally exposed to microplastics e.g. by using cosmetics, but with food and drink, an unknown amount of microplastics enter the body and there is barely no data on their effects. The main objective of this project is to study the chemical composition and additives of microplastics, their prevalence in food products and to evaluate their effects on cell cultures and gut models. The achieved information is of great importance for the risk assessment of microplastics. Research can influence the development of appropriate measures to prevent human exposure to microplastics. The research combines vast expertise in materials science, gut health and food safety, providing a unique platform for a comprehensive assessment of health risks.
